Residential Shelter Services
Casula is a small, one-of-a-kind, farm and community based residential shelter in the Aljezur concelho
Here, women and children can receive holistic support provided onsite and throughout the local community in order to restore their sense of safety and dignity.
We host a maximum of just two women and four children at any one time which allows for more focused and quality care.
Women are offered a range of services from legal counsel, financial education, therapies, organic food and meals, self-care treatments, child care and transportation support, work and housing support and more.
All of this to love and support a woman as she re-empowers herself to create a life of renewed possibility.
Take the Online Self-Assessment to see if Casula might be a good fit for you. You can also contact a Comadre who will speak with you to better understand your needs and share about options that might be available, including the shelter. There is no waitlist for the shelter. We welcome women on a first come, first served basis as each room opens.
To speak to a Comadre over the phone, call +351 961 685 623 Monday-Friday 10h-17h. You can also email us at anytime if it’s safe enough to do so.

What it is like to be a resident
Living at Casula means that you are invited into a larger community held lovingly by all the Comadres and Compadres.
Although the home is small, it is thoughtfully furnished and cozy and sits protected by the larger community house and gardens, classroom cabin and organic herb and vegetable farm.
Aside from receiving focused support services, residents are invited to participate in any of our weekly community classes, to check out books from the library, join for family meals, volunteer or work at the farm or simple rest, relax and take it all in.
The location is secured while also being open to the community which means Casula residents can also invite safe friends or family who wish to help, visit, or join for a class or event.
All staff receive continuing education on trauma informed care and safety protocols and are honoured to be able to support fellow community members in getting quality care in a critical moment of someone’s life.
We understand that someone might not want to have to be at Casula, and still, we intend that it is a vital and uplifting place that someone can feel proud to be a part of.
